Ideal Weight Calculator
Calculate your healthy ideal body weight based on scientific clinical equations. Compare estimates from the Devine, Robinson, Miller, and Hamwi formulas alongside the World Health Organization (WHO) healthy weight range.
How Ideal Body Weight is Estimated
Clinical ideal body weight (IBW) formulas were originally developed by medical researchers and pharmacologists to calculate safe drug dosages and renal clearance. Each equation uses a baseline weight for an adult of 5 feet (60 inches) tall and adds a linear multiplier for each additional inch:
- Devine Formula (1974): The standard equation utilized in global clinical medicine and pharmacokinetic dosing.
- Robinson Formula (1983): A revised iteration of the Devine formula using updated empirical demographic data.
- Miller Formula (1983): Developed as an alternative model using a higher base with a lower per-inch increment.
- Hamwi Formula (1964): A practical rule of thumb originally published for diabetic and nutritional counseling.
